Trump and Maduro Hold ‘Respectful’ Phone Call Amid Rising Tensions

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said on Sunday that a recent phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump was conducted in a friendly atmosphere and based on mutual respect.

Speaking to media, Maduro emphasized the importance of diplomacy, saying the call could mark the beginning of dialogue and mutual understanding between the two nations. He reiterated Venezuela’s desire to resolve issues through discussion and peaceful solutions.

According to the Venezuelan president, U.S. citizens are weary of military conflicts and do not wish to relive the tragedies of past wars like those in Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Vietnam. He stressed that preventing the recurrence of such crises requires joint efforts and mutual understanding.

Citing remarks made to Al Mayadeen, Maduro confirmed that the phone call, which took place within the past ten days, was polite and free of tension.

Maduro stated, “To achieve peace and justice, we must move forward calmly and confidently toward victory. This victory is valuable not only for us but for global peace.”

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump warned earlier that Washington’s pressure campaign on Venezuela has entered a new phase. He said that during the brief call with Maduro, the Venezuelan side was made aware of certain issues.

Trump also spoke of plans for a ground operation targeting drug trafficking groups in Venezuela—remarks that have raised concerns about a potential escalation in tensions between the two countries.
