Pakistan, EU Officials Discuss Security Threats and Humanitarian Crisis in Afghanistan

In a recent diplomatic effort to address the security and humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, Mohammad Sadiq, Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, met with Andreas Papaconstantinou, an official from the European Union’s humanitarian aid office. The meeting, announced on social media platform X on Tuesday, December 1, focused on regional security issues and Afghanistan’s ongoing humanitarian crisis.

During the meeting, Sadiq warned that the presence of terrorist groups in Afghanistan continues to pose a serious security threat, particularly to neighboring countries like Pakistan. He stressed the importance of regional and international cooperation to contain these security risks.

The two sides also discussed Afghanistan’s fragile and worsening humanitarian conditions, highlighting the urgent need to deliver aid to vulnerable populations, especially ahead of the winter season.

Pakistani officials claim that the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) group is operating from inside Afghanistan and launching attacks against Pakistan—a situation cited as one of the main reasons for the prolonged closure of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border over the past two months.

In response, the Taliban administration has dismissed these claims as baseless, asserting that no group is allowed to use Afghan territory for attacks against other countries. However, the persistence of such allegations and mutual distrust continues to complicate the region’s security dynamics.

While the Taliban administration emphasizes maintaining internal security, repeated reports of armed group activities across Afghanistan, particularly in border areas, have raised growing concerns among neighboring countries and international organizations.
