UN voices concern over restrictions on women in Afghanistan

On the 81st anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, the international body praised the resilience of the people of Afghanistan in the face of years of war, poverty, displacement and climate change, but said it remained concerned about restrictions imposed on women and girls in the country.

In a news release published on Saturday, the UN said the people of Afghanistan are facing wide-ranging humanitarian and economic challenges, and that returnees to the country are also encountering many difficulties.

The international body said it will continue its support in the areas of humanitarian assistance, health services, education, human rights advocacy, economic opportunity creation and disaster preparedness.

The UN said Afghanistan’s future belongs to its people and that the organisation remains committed to supporting Afghans through difficult humanitarian and economic conditions.

October 24 is celebrated each year as United Nations Day, marking the date on which the UN Charter came into effect in 1945.

While millions of people in Afghanistan are in need of humanitarian assistance, the United Nations has stressed the continuation of support for the country’s people.

Meanwhile, the Taliban administration has previously claimed that human rights in Afghanistan are now more effectively protected within the framework of Sharia law.
