UN marks founding anniversary as multiple crises threaten millions of Afghans

In a message marking the 81st anniversary of the founding of the international organisation, the United Nations said wars, widespread poverty, displacement and climate-related crises were among the main reasons behind the difficult situation facing millions of people in Afghanistan.

Despite these problems, the UN said it remained committed to saving lives, defending rights and supporting affected communities in Afghanistan. This comes as the country’s poor security and economic conditions have imposed serious constraints on the work of international organisations.

The United Nations Special Trust Fund for Afghanistan (UN_STFA) also pointed to the strength and resilience of the Afghan people, describing them as one of the main factors behind the UN’s progress in the country. The fund stressed that achievements are only possible through full cooperation with the people of Afghanistan.

October 24 is observed each year as United Nations Day. The day was designated by the UN General Assembly in 1947 to promote the organisation’s goals and achievements to the world and increase support for it.

Even so, with tensions and multiple crises continuing in Afghanistan, the UN’s promises still appear to face practical challenges and limits arising from the country’s poor security and political situation.
