Senior Russian Delegation to Visit Afghanistan to Expand Economic Ties

A senior Russian delegation will soon travel to Afghanistan to expand economic cooperation, according to Russian media reports citing Zamir Kabulov, the Russian president’s special envoy for Afghanistan. The delegation will be led by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk. The main purpose of the visit has been announced as increasing trade and economic cooperation between Afghanistan and Russia.
According to Kabulov, trade relations between the two countries are steadily expanding, and Moscow is seeking to maintain the pace of this growing engagement. The trip is being planned as Russia wants to continue the growth of economic cooperation with Afghanistan.
The presence of such a delegation could indicate Russia’s desire to strengthen its economic influence in Afghanistan, although the implications for Afghanistan’s economy and society still need to be examined. The Taliban administration has so far not issued any official explanation on the matter.
