Kremlin Warns US Over Possible Military Base in Lithuania

The Kremlin has warned the United States that establishing a military base in Lithuania and changing the country’s policy on the deployment of nuclear weapons could lead to rising tensions.

Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, said, citing RIA Novosti, that the creation of a US military base in Lithuania, along with lifting the ban on the deployment of nuclear weapons, would be “a step towards escalating tensions.”

He added that if Lithuania’s plans to lift the ban go ahead, Moscow would “have no choice” but to take the measures it deems necessary to ensure its own security.

Peskov also accused Germany’s leadership of seeking to justify higher spending on militarisation by “creating an imaginary enemy called Russia.”

The remarks come as the war in Ukraine has intensified in recent months and, according to Russian sources, the scale of attacks and tensions has spread beyond the Moscow-Kyiv geographical area and drawn in a number of European countries as well.
