UN says $18 million in emergency aid allocated to Afghanistan

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says $18 million in emergency funding has been allocated to support aid operations in Afghanistan.

OCHA wrote on the social media platform X today, Tuesday, 14 Mehr, that the money has been allocated to Afghanistan from the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).

According to OCHA, the aid is being announced at a time when 21.9 million people in Afghanistan need humanitarian assistance, and only about 31% of the 2026 humanitarian appeal has been funded.

Meanwhile, Tom Fletcher, the UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator, said the allocation of $160 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund had been approved to address 12 underfunded crises.

He added on X that, of this total, $10 million has been set aside to ensure that people with disabilities are not left out of aid.

Fletcher wrote: “87 million people are to be helped. There is no time to waste.” He also stressed that the world’s most neglected crises should not become forgotten crises.

The United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) is one of the UN’s rapid financing mechanisms, used to respond quickly to emergencies and make up funding shortfalls in humanitarian crises.
