UNAMA Chief Urges UN General Assembly to Keep Supporting Mission in Afghanistan

Roza Otunbayeva, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of UNAMA, has called on the president of the UN General Assembly to continue supporting UNAMA’s mission in Afghanistan.

In a message posted on the social media platform X on Monday, October 6, she said she had met with Khalilur Rahman, president of the United Nations General Assembly, and thanked him for his commitment to supporting the world’s most vulnerable countries and for paying attention to their priorities at the 81st session of the General Assembly.

According to Fathima, she also stressed during the meeting the importance of the General Assembly president’s continued support for UNAMA. She wrote that she is “counting on the continued support of the president of the General Assembly for the UNAMA mission, including in his new role.”

Rabab Fathima is a Bangladeshi diplomat and is the third woman appointed by the United Nations to lead its Assistance Mission in Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan.
