Australia Officially Designates Iran’s IRGC as State Sponsor of Terrorism

Australia’s Foreign Ministry has formally designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a supporter of state-sponsored terrorism. The decision is based on intelligence assessments claiming that IRGC-linked forces were involved in orchestrating potential attacks against Jewish communities within Australia.

In a statement, Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the government made the decision following intelligence reports about alleged hostile IRGC activities in Australian cities. Wong emphasized that ensuring the security of Jewish citizens is a top priority for her administration.

Earlier this year, in September, the Australian government accused the Islamic Republic of Iran of involvement in two antisemitic incidents in the cities of Sydney and Melbourne. Following these accusations, Iran’s ambassador in Canberra was given one week to leave the country.

Approximately three weeks ago, Australia’s House of Representatives voted by majority to authorize the formal designation of the IRGC as a state sponsor of terrorism. The move reflects growing international concerns over the IRGC’s regional and global activities.

In response to the announcement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry expressed its concern and rejected the allegations as baseless. Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stressed that the Islamic Republic opposes all forms of antisemitism.
