Taliban raises concern over civilian casualties in meeting with UN

The Taliban administration said in a meeting with the United Nations that it had raised concerns over civilian casualties in Pakistani airstrikes.

The Taliban-run Foreign Ministry said acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi discussed the issue with Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN deputy secretary-general. According to the ministry, the two sides also talked about protecting civilians and preventing such harm.

The meeting was held on Saturday, 11 Mehr, in Kabul. The Taliban-run Foreign Ministry said cooperation between Afghanistan and the United Nations, humanitarian aid, and coordinated efforts to address the needs of returning migrants and their reintegration were also among the topics discussed.

According to the ministry, the two sides also discussed expanding cooperation in the areas of climate change and water, and finding new opportunities within the Doha process. The statement said emphasis was placed on cooperation with practical results and a positive impact on people’s lives.

The Taliban-run Foreign Ministry also said the meeting stressed the use of accurate information and reliable sources to ensure balanced reporting and assessments about Afghanistan. The United Nations has not yet commented on the meeting.

The Doha process refers to a series of meetings hosted by the UN in the Qatari capital. UN officials view the process as a framework for discussing key political issues in Afghanistan and for structured engagement between international and regional actors and Taliban authorities.
