Nearly 300 Media Workers Detained Since Taliban Took Power, Afghan Journalists’ Centre Says

The Afghanistan Journalists Centre says that since the Taliban administration took power in 2021, nearly 300 journalists and media workers have been arrested or imprisoned on charges of failing to comply with the administration’s directives.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, 7 Mehr, the centre said broad restrictions have been imposed on media activity in Afghanistan during this period, and dozens of media outlets have either stopped operating or been shut down because of work-related constraints.

According to the Afghanistan Journalists Centre, these restrictions have made the work of journalists and media employees more difficult.

A day before releasing the statement, the centre had also said that public access to information in the country has faced unprecedented suppression and has in practice been eliminated. The organisation accused the Taliban administration of systematically restricting this right.
