UN Experts Call for Halt to US Transfer of Migrants to Third Countries

United Nations human rights experts have written to the US government calling on it to stop sending migrants to third countries, saying the move could expose them to abuse and human rights violations.

The experts warned that people transferred to these countries could face mistreatment and a denial of basic human rights. Their main concern, they said, is the impact of this process on migrants’ safety and human rights conditions.

According to the UN experts, Donald Trump’s administration has so far sent around 23,000 migrants to 29 countries and territories. The letter urges the US government to halt the process and act more responsibly regarding the fate of migrants.

UN human rights experts typically use the body’s special procedures mechanisms to raise cases involving human rights violations or the risk of such violations with governments and warn them about the consequences.
