Heavy rains in northern India kill at least 56

Heavy rains in Uttar Pradesh in northern India have triggered floods and landslides, killing at least 56 people and injuring 46 others.

Rishikesh Bashkar Yashod, head of Uttar Pradesh’s relief and rescue headquarters, said on Sunday that the state recorded 66.5 mm of rainfall from Friday to Sunday morning. The usual rainfall for that period is 7.6 mm, he said.

The official’s office said the deaths and damage followed a period of “extremely heavy rainfall” that affected large parts of Uttar Pradesh. According to the information, more than 1,000 homes were also damaged.

Meanwhile, reports from neighbouring Nepal show that recent rains there have also killed 12 people.

Uttar Pradesh is India’s most populous state and is located in the north of the country. During the monsoon season, parts of India and neighbouring countries face floods and landslides every year.
