WHO records 170 deaths from respiratory illnesses in Afghanistan
The World Health Organization says 170 deaths linked to acute respiratory illnesses have been recorded in Afghanistan. The agency said 64,506 cases of acute respiratory disease were also registered in the country during the same period.
According to a report released on Sunday, 5 Mizan, the number of recorded respiratory disease cases fell by 17.4% compared with July. However, these diseases remain among Afghanistan’s major public health challenges.
The World Health Organization also said 1,423 suspected measles cases and seven related deaths were recorded. The agency said this figure showed a 44.5% decline compared with July.
In July, 2,562 suspected measles cases and nine deaths from the disease were reported. The new report comes as Afghanistan’s health sector continues to face widespread problems, with a large part of the country’s population having limited access to health services.
The World Health Organization is one of the main international bodies monitoring and responding to health conditions in countries, and its periodic reports are considered reliable indicators of disease trends in Afghanistan.
