Asian Development Bank to expand support for people in Afghanistan

Masato Kanda, president of the Asian Development Bank, has announced that the institution will expand its support for the people of Afghanistan with a new approach focused on continuing essential services, strengthening community resilience and creating livelihood opportunities.

In a message posted on the social media platform X on Friday, Kanda said the Asian Development Bank has supported the people of Afghanistan since 2022 through its trusted partners in the areas of food security, health and education.

Pointing to rising humanitarian needs and a worsening situation in Afghanistan, he added that the bank remains committed to continuing assistance for the country’s people.

According to the president of the Asian Development Bank, the institution will seek to ensure its aid is used with strong oversight and accountability, and that women will also benefit in a special way from this support, including through women-led initiatives.

The Asian Development Bank is one of the regional financial institutions that in recent years has channelled part of its aid to Afghanistan through partner organizations and outside the Taliban administration’s structure.
