UN envoy urges access to education for girls in Afghanistan
Gordon Brown, the UN special envoy for global education, has issued a message calling for girls to be allowed access to education in Afghanistan, a subject that remains one of the main issues in foreign engagement with Afghanistan amid the Taliban administration’s continued restrictions on education.
He urged the international community, Muslim countries and parties in contact with the Taliban administration to raise the issue of girls’ education in their talks. The call comes as girls remain barred from education beyond sixth grade and from universities.
The persistence of these restrictions has made girls’ education one of the key issues in the international community’s relations with the Taliban administration. The latest appeal from the UN special envoy also shows that the matter remains at the top of international concerns about Afghanistan.
