UN to Help Repair Shelters for 800 Returnees in Kunduz and Baghlan
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme has announced that it will provide shelter repair and improvement assistance for 800 vulnerable returnees in the provinces of Kunduz and Baghlan, in a move that covers only part of the shortfall facing the large number of returning families.
The agency said on Tuesday, 31 Sumbula, in a post on X that the programme is being implemented with support from the Afghanistan Special Trust Fund (STFA). According to the agency, returning families are in urgent need of adequate shelter, and the programme has been launched to help rebuild the homes of those in need.
UN-Habitat also said that despite the start of this programme, shelter needs among returnees remain widespread and many families still require help to rebuild their homes.
The aid comes as the wave of Afghan returns from neighbouring countries has placed additional pressure on host communities. The Taliban administration had previously said that more than 617,000 people returned to Afghanistan from Iran and Pakistan in the first six months of the current year.
Kunduz and Baghlan are provinces in northeastern and northern Afghanistan, where a number of returning families are facing shortages of basic necessities, including shelter.
