Taliban officials in Herat discuss climate change with DACAAR
The Taliban administration in Herat said Molavi Islam-Jar, the governor of the province, met with Peter Thurlingx, head of DACAAR in Afghanistan, and several foreign staff members of the organisation to discuss environmental protection and the consequences of climate change.
According to a statement from the Herat local administration, the meeting emphasised efforts to counter climate change, restore forests in line with climatic conditions, and create opportunities for work and livelihoods for residents of remote areas. Islam-Jar said the effects of climate change are among the factors influencing people’s migration, and practical and sustainable measures must be taken to reduce these problems.
The Taliban administration also quoted the governor of Herat as saying that restoring forests and implementing suitable programmes to tackle climate change are necessary to protect the environment and preserve the interests of future generations.
Meanwhile, DACAAR officials said the organisation was ready to cooperate in the areas of water, agriculture and combating climate change. They also said addressing the situation of migrants was among the organisation’s goals.
According to the Herat local administration, the meeting also included discussions on expanding saffron cultivation in Herat, jujube in Farah and pistachios in Badghis. DACAAR is one of the organisations active in rural development and water management in Afghanistan.
