US, China continue economic talks ahead of Trump-Xi meeting
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said that Washington and Beijing have continued economic and trade talks ahead of US President Donald Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
According to Mehr news agency, Bessent said on Sunday that he met with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in New York. He described the meeting as part of consultations between the two sides on economic and trade relations between the United States and China.
In a post on the social media platform X, the US Treasury secretary wrote that he and He Lifeng are continuing their talks ahead of the Trump-Xi summit in Washington.
Bessent also claimed that the negotiations could pave the way for Trump to advance US economic interests and achieve tangible results for the American people.
The United States and China, the world’s two largest economies, have repeatedly clashed and negotiated in recent years over trade, tariffs and global supply chains, making meetings between officials from the two countries economically significant.
