Qatar Stresses Diplomacy to Contain Regional Tensions and Press for Gaza Commitments

Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said Doha has prioritised diplomacy to preserve regional stability and keep channels of communication open. He said recent events had put existing assumptions about security and stability in the region to a serious test, and that the repercussions had extended beyond the region’s borders.

According to him, talks during the recent crises first focused on security and then moved to energy supplies and shipping. The Qatari prime minister added that his country does not underestimate the current uncertainty, but will not allow short-term disruptions to determine the future course.

Al Thani said Qatar is seeking to strengthen economic resilience and create growth opportunities through investment and reform, and still wants to maintain its role as a mediator, a reliable energy supplier and an investment partner. He stressed that, from Doha’s perspective, economic stability and diplomacy are closely linked, and that lasting security cannot be achieved without building trust and addressing the sources of tension.

The Qatari prime minister also said the region needs a framework that respects countries’ sovereignty while preventing any state from becoming a threat to others. He added that Qatar has worked with its regional and international partners to ease tensions and maintain political contacts, and that despite recent events, the country’s financial system has remained active and companies have continued operating.

In another part of his remarks, he called on Israel to fulfil its commitments to Gaza. Al Thani said those commitments have not been implemented and that while the killing and obstruction of aid deliveries to Gaza continue, the world has taken no effective action.

In recent years, Qatar has taken on a mediating role in several regional cases, especially on Gaza, between the parties involved. The country is also considered one of the key energy players in the Gulf market.
