Taliban Administration and Turkmenistan Review Expansion of Transit via Torghundi

The Taliban administration in Herat said Noor Ahmad Islam Jar, the governor of the province, met with Batur Yulov, Turkmenistan’s consul general in Herat, to discuss expanding economic cooperation, transit routes, the Herat-Torghundi railway line and the transfer of Turkmenistan electricity to Farah.

According to a statement from the Herat governor’s press office, the meeting also discussed developing the Torghundi route as one way to increase trade and transit between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. Citing Islam Jar, the Taliban administration said expanding this route could help boost trade between the two sides.

The Taliban administration said the Turkmen consul general also pledged to raise the issues discussed at the meeting with his country’s officials. He also said efforts would be made to increase trade and transit through the Torghundi route.

Torghundi is one of the important border crossings between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan in Herat province and has repeatedly been highlighted in recent years as one of the key routes for transporting goods and linking railway lines in western Afghanistan.
