Taliban Administration to Form Joint Technical Committee to Boost Cybersecurity
The Taliban administration says it will establish a joint technical committee after reviewing the state of cybersecurity and the vulnerabilities of information systems, a move that indicates the institutions involved are facing possible challenges and threats in this area.
The Taliban administration’s Ministry of Urban Development and Housing said in a statement on Thursday that a joint technical meeting was held under the chairmanship of Najibullah Hayat Haqqani, the acting minister of urban development and housing. According to the ministry, representatives from the ministries of communications and information technology, interior, national defence, foreign affairs, the General Directorate of Intelligence, and the National Statistics and Information Authority also attended the meeting.
According to the statement, participants discussed the current state of cybersecurity, the security of information systems, potential threats and vulnerabilities, strengthening technical infrastructure, and ways to respond to cyber incidents. Technical problems relating to network protection, the handling of sensitive information, prevention of possible attacks, and management of security incidents were also raised.
The Taliban administration said the meeting stressed coordination among departments, standardising security measures, assessing the security of information systems, timely identification of threats, and creating rapid response mechanisms for cyber incidents. According to the administration, the newly formed committee has been tasked with examining the technical, security and administrative aspects related to the issue and proposing practical, standard solutions to address the problems.
According to the statement, after collecting shared views and carrying out technical assessments in the relevant departments, the committee will prepare a comprehensive draft to be reviewed at the next meeting and then sent to the Taliban administration’s Council of Ministers for approval.
Cybersecurity refers to the protection of networks, systems and digital information against intrusion, attack and misuse — an issue that has become more important in government institutions and public services as reliance on digital systems has grown.
