Taliban says around 17 million people in Afghanistan use the internet
A spokesman for the Taliban-run Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology has said that about 17 million people in Afghanistan use the internet. According to him, there are currently 32 million active SIM cards in the country, and nearly half of these subscribers are internet users.
Enayatullah Alokozai said around 10 million internet users have access to fourth-generation mobile services (4G). He also claimed that the number of people using these services was slightly above 2 million before the Taliban returned to power.
The Taliban ministry spokesman added that, with the expansion of telecommunications network coverage, a large part of Afghanistan now has access to telecom and internet services. However, he provided no details on the quality of services, the cost of use, or the actual level of access in different provinces and districts.
Access to the internet has become one of the important parts of digital services in Afghanistan in recent years. This could affect remote education, online communications and internet-based economic activity, although any assessment of the sector’s real situation still depends on service quality and the extent of access in different areas.
