EU-backed mother and newborn care centre operating in Logar

The United Nations Population Fund has said that maternal care and safe delivery services for women in Logar province have been provided with support from the European Union, underscoring the broad need for specialised maternal care amid ongoing challenges in women’s access to health services.
According to the agency, the mother and newborn care centre in Logar, backed by the European Union and operated by the Afghanistan Midwives Association in cooperation with the United Nations, provides maternal health services.
The report said the centre is particularly serving women who face barriers in accessing health services. UNFPA said the services include specialised care to reduce the risks of pregnancy and to create conditions for safe delivery.
The agency added that timely decisions and access to specialised care can prevent serious complications during pregnancy and childbirth. According to UNFPA, these services are especially important for women who have limited access to antenatal care or who have previously faced pregnancy-related problems.
The European Union had previously said that Afghanistan is among the countries facing one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Logar province is located south of Kabul, and parts of it face limited access to essential health services.
