Malala Yousafzai says Taliban have ‘nothing to celebrate’ after five years in power

Malala Yousafzai, the Nobel Peace Prize winner and education activist, has said the Taliban administration has “nothing to celebrate” five years after returning to power, because, in her words, it has imposed “gender apartheid” on millions of women and girls.

She stressed that Afghan women have not remained silent in the face of these policies and are organising and working, both inside and outside the country, to hold the Taliban administration accountable.

The remarks come as the Taliban’s sweeping restrictions on the education, work and public presence of women and girls have been a central focus of international criticism of the administration.

Malala Yousafzai is one of the world’s best-known figures in girls’ education and has repeatedly spoken out on the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan since winning the Nobel Peace Prize.
