Amnesty International calls for firm global action to hold Taliban administration accountable

Amnesty International, citing the past five years since the Taliban administration took power, said Afghanistan has faced a catastrophic human rights crisis during this period and that impunity and injustice have overshadowed people’s lives. The organization has called on the international community to take a more unified and stronger approach to holding the Taliban administration accountable.

Amnesty International’s South Asia regional office, alongside the launch of the global campaign “Break the Silence; End Human Rights Violations in Afghanistan,” stressed that the continuation of Taliban rule has not improved the situation, but instead has led to the continuation of repression and violations of the fundamental rights of the Afghan people.

In a petition, Amnesty International has called on the international community to immediately create a strong and sustainable mechanism to address human rights violations in Afghanistan. The organization also stressed the use of all pressure tools to force the Taliban administration to respect the rights of women and girls, end gender persecution, stop corporal punishment, and establish an independent and impartial judicial system.

The rights group has also called on citizens in different countries to join the campaign and urge their governments to take clear and practical action against the ongoing repression in Afghanistan.

Amnesty International is one of the best-known international bodies in documenting and following up on human rights violations, and in the years since the Taliban administration returned to power, it has repeatedly warned about sweeping restrictions on women, girls and civil liberties in Afghanistan.
