Amnesty International urges global action to hold Taliban administration accountable

Amnesty International, referring to the past five years since the Taliban administration took power, said Afghanistan has faced a catastrophic human rights crisis during this period, with impunity and injustice overshadowing people’s lives. The organisation has called on the international community to adopt a more unified and firmer approach to hold the Taliban administration accountable.

Amnesty International’s South Asia regional office, launching the global campaign “Break the Silence; End Human Rights Violations in Afghanistan,” said the continuation of Taliban rule has not improved the situation, but instead has led to the persistence of repression and violations of the fundamental rights of the Afghan people.

In a petition, Amnesty International has called on the international community to immediately establish a strong and sustainable mechanism to address human rights violations in Afghanistan. The organisation has also stressed the use of all pressure tools to compel the Taliban administration to respect the rights of women and girls, end gender persecution, stop corporal punishment, and create an independent and impartial judicial system.

The rights group has also urged citizens in different countries to join the campaign and call on their governments to take clear and practical action against the ongoing repression in Afghanistan.

Amnesty International is one of the best-known international organisations in documenting and pursuing human rights violations and has repeatedly warned in the years since the Taliban returned to power about sweeping restrictions on women, girls and civil liberties in Afghanistan.
