Norwegian Refugee Council Accuses NATO of Neglecting Its Promises to Afghan People

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has warned that Afghanistan is grappling simultaneously with severe humanitarian, economic, and climate crises, while NATO member countries have failed to uphold their previous commitments to the Afghan people.

Jan Egeland, Secretary General of the NRC, stated on Monday, August 10, that NATO countries have forgotten their promises to the sons and daughters of Afghanistan and have turned away from the civilians of the country. He added, “In the face of growing needs and the declining rights of girls and women across Afghanistan, we find ourselves more isolated than ever.”

According to the report, since late 2023, more than six million Afghan migrants have returned from neighboring countries to Afghanistan; a trend that has increased pressure on the country’s limited internal resources.

The NRC says that 73 percent of those returning are unemployed and have limited access to job opportunities and income resources. According to the Norwegian Refugee Council, climate crises, regional tensions, and increasing restrictions against women and girls have made living conditions in Afghanistan even more difficult.

The Norwegian Refugee Council is an international humanitarian organization that has repeatedly warned in recent years about the reduction of global aid to Afghanistan.
