Afghan Activists Protest Against Taliban Restrictions on Women in Frankfurt
On Saturday, August 8, a group of Afghan activists gathered in Frankfurt, Germany, to protest against the Taliban administration’s restrictions on women and girls. They called on the international community to abandon its lenient approach towards the Taliban government. The demonstration took place on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan.
The protesters emphasized that over the past five years, Afghan women have been deprived of education, employment, and participation in social spheres, and that this situation should not become normalized in global political interactions with the Taliban administration. They warned that ignoring the rights of millions of Afghan women and girls in political calculations effectively means handing over the fate of the country’s people to the Taliban.
Participants of the protest stated that while the international community has been aware of the situation of Afghan women, it has remained silent in the face of violations of their rights on some occasions. According to them, although the Taliban hold control over Afghanistan, they will never be able to silence the will and demands of the women of the country.
A statement released by the organizers noted that during years of migration and exile, only the place and method of resistance have changed, but the protest of Afghan women continues and will not stop until they achieve their basic rights.
One of the event organizers said that the gathering was held in cooperation with Amnesty International and the “Women, Life, Freedom” Association in Frankfurt, aiming to once again draw the international community’s attention to the plight of Afghan women on the fifth anniversary of the Taliban’s rule.
