Pakistan Announces Reopening of Border Crossings with Afghanistan

Mohsin Naqvi, Pakistan’s Interior Minister, has announced that all border crossings and transit routes between Pakistan and Afghanistan will be reopened, an action that, if implemented, could relieve pressure on traders from both countries.

The Pakistani media outlet Minute Mirror reported on Saturday night (August 7) that this decision was made during a meeting chaired by Mr. Naqvi, attended by senior officials and representatives from Pakistan’s business community. The report stated that the meeting focused on finding solutions to remove obstacles to bilateral trade and facilitate the transfer of goods between the two nations.

According to the report, the issue of “facilitating legal travel” for Afghan and Pakistani citizens was also discussed, though no concrete decisions were made on this matter.

So far, federal government officials in Pakistan have not officially commented on the details or the timeline for implementing the reopening of the routes.

The border crossings and transit routes between the two countries were closed following military clashes last year between Taliban forces and Pakistani security. After tensions escalated, both sides closed the routes, and currently, only the Torkham crossing in Nangarhar province, Spin Boldak in Kandahar, and Bahramcha in Helmand remain open exclusively for the return of migrants from Pakistan.
