465,000-Dollar Agreement Signed to Clear Mines in Kabul and Logar
In response to growing concerns over extensive land contamination by mines and explosives, a $465,152 agreement has been signed to clear 25 million square meters of land in the provinces of Kabul and Logar.
On Tuesday, August 4th, the Taliban’s National Disaster Management Authority announced that this agreement was signed with the Omar Mine Clearance Institute. According to the terms, contaminated areas in Khak-e-Jabar district of Kabul and the Mes Aynak area in Mohammad Agha district of Logar will be cleared of mines and unexploded ordnance.
The Taliban authority stated that approximately 969,000 people will directly and indirectly benefit from the project. The cleared lands will then be prepared for residential, economic, and agricultural use.
This agreement has been signed while Afghanistan remains among the most heavily mine-contaminated countries in the world. This long-standing issue continues to threaten the lives of residents, especially children and farmers. The demining process depends on cooperation and support from both domestic and international organizations.
