Mahmoud Raqi City Quadruples in Size Over 21 Years, UN-Habitat Highlights Rapid Urbanization in Afghanistan
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) has reported that Mahmoud Raqi, the capital of Kapisa province, has expanded fourfold over the past 21 years; a trend that the agency describes as a clear example of rapid urbanization in Afghanistan.
On Sunday, August 2, UN-Habitat stated on its X (formerly Twitter) page that with the swift increase in urban population, smart planning and investment in infrastructure have become urgent needs.
According to UN-Habitat, city development must be managed in a way that meets the growing demands of residents and prevents unbalanced expansion and pressure on urban services.
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme emphasized that cities can only be sustainable when they are designed and managed efficiently, inclusively, and liveably for all citizens. The agency had previously warned about the consequences of unplanned urban growth in Afghanistan.
