Afghan Consulate in Mashhad Outlines Procedure for Switching to Electronic Passports

The Afghan Consulate in the Iranian city of Mashhad has issued a new notice detailing the process for Afghan migrants to replace their family passports with electronic ones.

According to the statement, applicants must first obtain an electronic appointment through the ‘Kefalat’ (sponsorship) offices in Mashhad before visiting the consulate in person. Bringing the appointment receipt and clearly indicating the appointment date during the visit is mandatory.

The diplomatic mission warned that it will not admit or provide services to individuals who arrive without prior coordination and a scheduled appointment.

These measures come amid ongoing difficulties faced by thousands of Afghan migrants in Iran, who often live under precarious legal conditions. Accessing official identification documents through formal channels remains a significant challenge for them. Meanwhile, the Taliban administration inside Afghanistan has severely weakened consular and public service infrastructure.
