Bipartisan Bill Introduced to Extend Temporary Protected Status for Afghan Nationals in the US

A group of Democratic and Republican members of the US House of Representatives have introduced a bill to extend the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) period for eligible Afghan citizens in the United States. If passed, this measure would prevent their forced return to Afghanistan.

According to an American newspaper, the bill’s sponsors emphasized that “Afghans who supported US military efforts during the 20-year war should not be sent back to Afghanistan.”

The office of Jason Crow, a Democratic representative from Colorado, stated in a press release that the “Afghanistan Temporary Protected Status Act” has been introduced to the House by Jason Crow, Ted Lieu, a Democratic representative from California, Don Bacon, a Republican representative from Nebraska, and Maria Elvira Salazar, a Republican representative from Florida.

Temporary Protected Status is a program under US immigration law that allows nationals from countries experiencing crisis or insecurity to reside and work in the United States for a designated period.
