Projectile Hits Tanker in Strait of Hormuz; Crew Evacuated
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has reported that a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz sent a distress signal after being struck by an unidentified projectile, forcing the crew to abandon the vessel.
According to the organization, the incident occurred on Tuesday approximately 8 nautical miles east of Limah, Oman. The tanker reported being targeted via VHF channel 16 and the crew evacuated the ship using lifeboats.
The security officer of the tanker’s operating company has also confirmed that all crew members are accounted for in the lifeboats. UKMTO has stated that no reports of environmental pollution resulting from the incident have been received so far. The identity of the tanker and its owner have not been disclosed, and investigations are ongoing.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that two tankers caught fire and exploded while crossing the southern route of the Strait of Hormuz. The group said rescue teams are evacuating the crews from the area but provided no details about the identities of the ships. It remains unclear whether the tanker mentioned by UKMTO is one of the vessels referenced by the Revolutionary Guard.
