UNAMA Warns of Unprecedented Pressure on Journalists Worldwide
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has stated that journalists around the world are facing unprecedented pressures, and the weakening of independent media threatens people’s access to reliable information.
On Monday, July 20, UNAMA posted on its Facebook page that the spread of misinformation and misleading content generated by artificial intelligence, alongside censorship and increased attacks against journalists, are among the most significant challenges confronting the profession.
According to the mission, the reduction in financial and structural support for independent media also poses a serious threat to the future of journalism serving the public interest. UNAMA questioned what society stands to lose if free journalism is weakened.
These warnings come as journalists and media outlets in Afghanistan have faced extensive restrictions, security pressures, and a noticeably shrinking space for operation since the Taliban took control in 2021. Journalist advocacy groups have repeatedly expressed concerns over censorship, limited access to information, and the economic difficulties facing independent media in the country.
