South Korea Donates $1 Million to Support Earthquake Victims in Eastern Afghanistan

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Afghanistan has announced a $1 million donation from the Republic of South Korea to address the urgent needs of earthquake victims in the eastern provinces of the country.

This financial assistance comes as many residents of eastern Afghanistan—particularly those affected by recent earthquakes and returnees from Pakistan—face extremely difficult conditions at the onset of winter, requiring immediate humanitarian aid.

According to a UNHCR statement released on Thursday (November 17), the funding will be essential in delivering humanitarian and support services to vulnerable communities, including recent returnees from Pakistan. The aid is expected to play a crucial role in alleviating the ongoing humanitarian crisis in these regions.

The Taliban administration has once again demonstrated its inability to manage crises effectively, having failed to implement adequate support measures for earthquake victims and returnees since the beginning of winter. Negligence in addressing the dire conditions faced by these families could result in further human suffering.

Despite international assistance such as that provided by South Korea, the Taliban authorities have so far not only failed to effectively mobilize domestic resources but have also, in many cases, hindered the distribution of aid.
