Taliban Interior Minister Meets UN Officials to Discuss Refugee Issues

Khalifa Sirajuddin Haqqani, the Taliban’s Interior Minister, met with Bassem Saleh, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Arafat Jamal, the UN’s representative in Afghanistan, and their accompanying delegation to discuss the situation of refugees.
According to a statement issued by the Taliban’s Ministry of Interior, the UN High Commissioner emphasized the continuation of UNHCR’s cooperation to address the challenges faced by Afghan refugees during the meeting. He also highlighted that supporting returning Afghans and providing humanitarian assistance remain top priorities for the agency.
The statement noted that these cooperative efforts will focus on managing the process of return, resettlement, and addressing the basic needs of returning families—families that in recent years have faced economic hardships and a lack of essential services.
The Taliban’s Interior Minister, for his part, expressed appreciation for UNHCR’s efforts and cooperation in the transfer and management of refugee issues and stressed the importance of ongoing coordination between both parties.
