Iranian Consul General Meets Taliban-Appointed Governor in Herat

Alireza Marhamati, the Consul General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Herat province, has met with Sheikh Mawlawi Islamjar, the Taliban-appointed governor of the region.

According to information released by the press office of the Herat governor’s office, the meeting focused on bilateral cooperation in areas including the economy, trade, and agriculture.

During the meeting, Islamjar called on Iranian officials to play a more active role in strengthening economic and transit relations between the two sides. He specifically emphasized making optimal use of the Islam Qala border crossing as a trade gateway between the two countries.

The meeting comes amid widespread concerns over the legitimacy of the Taliban administration, both domestically and internationally. Critics argue that diplomatic engagement by neighboring countries with the Taliban authorities—without considering the will of the Afghan people—could contribute to the persistence of the current undemocratic status quo.
