Cluster Bomb Explosion Kills Two Children in Afghanistan’s Badghis Province

Two children were killed in a cluster bomb explosion in Bala Murghab district of Afghanistan’s Badghis province, local Taliban officials confirmed. The incident occurred on Sunday morning, November 8, in the Panirak area, when the children found an unexploded ordnance while herding livestock and caused it to detonate after throwing it into a fire.

A spokesperson for the Taliban’s provincial police command in Badghis stated that both children died instantly. The tragedy has reignited concerns about the widespread presence of landmines and unexploded bombs across Afghanistan.

Although major conflicts have subsided in recent years, the lingering effects of war continue to claim civilian lives, particularly those of children. The Taliban administration has acknowledged that roughly 1,150 square kilometers of Afghan territory remain contaminated with mines and explosive remnants of war.

Meanwhile, the United Nations has warned that more than 3.3 million Afghans live in close proximity to these hazardous zones. Without comprehensive demining efforts and public awareness campaigns, the risk of civilian casualties is expected to persist.

The ongoing threat and lack of a national demining strategy highlight the Taliban administration’s inability to manage humanitarian crises and ensure the safety of Afghan citizens.
