UN and Taliban Discuss Continuation and Improvement of Humanitarian Aid to Afghanistan

The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations for Political and Peace Affairs held a telephone conversation with the Taliban’s Foreign Minister regarding the continuation and enhancement of humanitarian aid efforts in Afghanistan. This call took place shortly after the UN Security Council renewed the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

According to a statement issued by the Taliban administration, Amir Khan Muttaqi and Rosemary DiCarlo exchanged views on delivering aid to Afghan people in need and improving the effectiveness of the aid process. The statement noted that DiCarlo appreciated the Taliban administration’s facilitation and cooperation in humanitarian activities and highlighted its importance for timely delivery of aid.

The Deputy Secretary-General also provided updates on the latest developments related to UNAMA and outlined the ongoing efforts and programs of the agency in Afghanistan. As the political representation of the United Nations, UNAMA plays a central role in coordinating international aid and facilitating political dialogues within the country.

At the conclusion of the call, both parties emphasized the continuation of mutual understanding and the expansion of cooperation. This comes after the UN Security Council, on June 15, 2024, adopted a resolution extending UNAMA’s mission until June 17, 2027, stressing the mission’s role in facilitating dialogue among the Taliban administration, regional countries, the international community, and civil society organizations.

The Security Council also urged UNAMA to support the formation of an inclusive governance system involving women, minorities, and other segments of society, while continuously monitoring and reporting on Afghanistan’s human rights situation as well as political, security, economic, and social developments — demands that remain major challenges for the Taliban administration over time.
