Kazakhstan and Taliban Discuss Establishing Water Research Center at Kabul University

The Taliban’s Ministry of Higher Education has announced that Neda Mohammad Nadim, the acting head of the ministry, held an online meeting with Kazakhstan’s Minister of Science and Higher Education to discuss the development of scientific cooperation between the two countries. During the meeting, both sides emphasized expanding academic relations and strengthening scientific interactions.
According to a press release issued on Wednesday, the Kazakh Minister of Science proposed establishing a water research center at Kabul University and committed to collaborating in this field. No further details regarding the practical framework of this cooperation have been released.
Due to Afghanistan’s geographical position and challenges related to water resource management, there is a critical need for developing specialized research in this sector. If realized, such a center could help enhance scientific capacities in water-related studies.
This comes amid previously signed memorandums of understanding between Afghanistan and Kazakhstan in scientific and educational fields, with some cooperation already implemented. However, the Taliban’s extensive restrictions on higher education—especially the ban on girls’ access to universities—remain a significant concern for the genuine and inclusive development of higher education in the country.
