UN Extends UNAMA Mission in Afghanistan Until June 2027 Amid Growing Concerns

The United Nations Security Council has approved a resolution extending the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) until June 17, 2027. The resolution outlines the framework of UNAMA’s duties and responsibilities and emphasizes the continued active presence of the mission in Afghanistan.

According to the resolution, UNAMA will continue coordinating humanitarian aid, supporting the fulfillment of the basic needs of the Afghan people, monitoring the country’s economic and social situation, and strengthening regional cooperation. The mission’s core tasks also include supporting the rights of women and girls and promoting inclusive governance.

The Security Council expressed concern over the dire humanitarian and economic situation in Afghanistan in part of the resolution. It also called restrictions imposed on the rights of women and girls troubling; these limitations, enforced by the Taliban administration over the past nearly five years, have severely curtailed women’s access to education, employment, and social participation.

The extension of UNAMA’s mandate comes at a time when Afghanistan faces extensive economic and humanitarian challenges, with international organizations repeatedly stressing the need to establish inclusive systems and uphold the fundamental rights of citizens, especially women and girls.
