Shahmama Conference in Geneva to Address the Situation of Afghan Women

The third international Shahmama Conference, focusing on the situation of Afghan women, will be held on Monday, June 15, at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The event is organized in collaboration with more than 12 countries, the UN Women entity, and several international organizations.

According to published information, Afghan women, diplomats, policymakers, human rights experts, representatives of international organizations, and civil society activists will attend the conference. Additionally, several speakers from various countries will present their perspectives during the meeting.

The main focus of this gathering is to review the current situation of women in Afghanistan and the challenges they have faced in recent years. Participants are set to discuss political solutions to support women’s rights, ensure justice, and guarantee meaningful participation of women in Afghanistan’s future.

For nearly five years, Afghan women have endured extensive restrictions imposed by the Taliban administration. Prohibitions on girls’ education, barring women from working in many offices, and limitations on social participation are among the measures that have severely impacted the lives of millions of women.

Since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan, many women have been forced into confinement at home and deprived of their basic rights; a situation that continues to provoke widespread domestic and international concern and is a central topic for discussion at the Geneva conference.
