Taliban Representative Meets UNHCR Official in Doha to Discuss Afghan Refugees’ Challenges

Mohammad Sohail Shaheen, the Taliban representative in Doha, met with Charlie Good, Head of External Relations at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), to discuss the situation of Afghan refugees in Pakistan and Iran and the challenges they face.

According to released information, the two sides discussed issues concerning refugees, including residency conditions and the process of their return to Afghanistan. They also focused on the situation of those Afghans who have returned to the country and how humanitarian aid can be effectively provided to them.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the wave of returning refugees from neighboring countries, with many returnees facing economic difficulties and a shortage of basic services across various regions. However, field reports indicate that the distribution of aid and the establishment of sustainable housing for returnees continue to face serious challenges.

Given the Taliban administration’s responsibility toward its citizens, it is expected that they will coordinate with international organizations to implement a transparent and practical plan to address the situation of returnees, in order to prevent further social and economic crises.
