US Warns at UN Security Council Against Unlimited Engagement with Taliban Administration

The United Nations Security Council held a meeting on Afghanistan on Monday marked by divergent positions among member states. The US representative emphasized that tangible progress in the Doha process is an “urgent necessity” and cannot be postponed.

Jeffrey Bartos, the US Representative for UN Management and Reform, warned that the international community cannot indefinitely continue engagement with the Taliban administration. He highlighted ongoing issues such as American citizens still in detention, violations of women’s rights, and unfulfilled commitments related to counter-terrorism.

During the meeting, each country expressed its views on the situation in Afghanistan, the performance of the Taliban administration, and how the global community should proceed with its engagement with Kabul. The differing assessments underscored the absence of a clear consensus regarding the future direction of relations with Afghanistan under Taliban rule.

The Doha process is recognized as a framework for dialogue between Afghanistan and the international community. However, persistent restrictions on women and girls, contested detentions, and security concerns remain key challenges repeatedly cited in international forums. These issues were once again underscored at the Security Council, emphasizing the necessity for accountability from the Taliban administration.
