Nimroz Governor Urges UNAMA to Report Ground Realities Accurately

During an official meeting between Mawlawi Abdul Manan Mahmood, the Taliban-appointed governor of Nimroz province, and Alberto Borrella, the political affairs officer at the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), demands were made for more accurate reporting on the region’s situation.
Governor Mahmood emphasized that UNAMA representatives must report the realities on the ground in a complete and transparent manner, avoiding partial or inaccurate portrayals. Referring to the social and economic conditions of the people, he called on the United Nations to help provide alternative livelihoods to prevent reliance on drug cultivation.
Mahmood also claimed that the cultivation, purchase, and sale of narcotics are banned in Afghanistan, and that the Taliban administration has taken steps to enforce this. He urged UNAMA to cooperate more effectively with the local administration in Nimroz in efforts to combat unemployment and deliver humanitarian assistance.
In response, UNAMA’s Alberto Borrella stated that the Taliban’s efforts to curb drug cultivation have been reflected in the UN’s reports, but pledged to communicate the governor’s requests to the relevant UN officials.
This meeting between Taliban officials and UNAMA is part of limited efforts to maintain relations with international institutions, a delicate and controversial issue amid the global community’s ongoing refusal to grant political legitimacy to the Taliban.
