France Launches Investigation into Alleged Torture of ‘Steadfast Fleet’ Activists by Israeli Forces

France’s National Office for the Fight Against Terrorism has announced the opening of an official investigation into allegations of torture and human rights violations against activists of the ‘Steadfast Fleet’ by Israeli military personnel. The case also includes a probe into accusations of war crimes linked to Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel’s Minister of Internal Security.

According to a report by the French news agency AFP, these preliminary investigations are being conducted by France’s Central Office for the Fight Against Crimes Against Humanity. This move follows the release of a video showing Ben-Gvir’s harsh treatment of the fleet’s passengers, prompting the French Foreign Minister to submit an official report to the country’s Attorney General.

Revelations from several members of the ‘Global Steadfast Fleet’ have triggered a wave of reactions across Europe. They claim that after their boats, en route to the Gaza Strip in international waters, were seized, they were subjected to torture, sexual abuse, and mistreatment—allegations that, if proven, would constitute severe violations of human rights and international law.

Some European activists spoke to Al Jazeera Mubasher providing further details about their detention conditions. They reported being held for several days on a ‘floating prison’ where they endured beatings, forced nudity, and deprivation of water, food, and sleep.

Israeli officials have not yet publicly responded to the announcement of this investigation by France. The judicial review process in France could add new legal dimensions to this ongoing international case.
