Friends of Afghanistan Group Holds Meeting Focused on Political, Humanitarian, and Human Rights Situation
Canada’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations announced that it initiated and hosted a meeting of the Friends of Afghanistan group, during which the latest updates on Afghanistan’s political, economic, humanitarian, and human rights conditions were presented.
Yesterday, the Canadian mission posted on its official X social media page that representatives from the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and the International Committee of the Red Cross delivered reports on the current situation in the country. The main focus of these reports was on political developments, the economic situation, and humanitarian challenges.
The meeting also included discussions on the human rights situation in Afghanistan—a subject that has been a major international concern since the Taliban’s return to power. Restrictions on fundamental rights and freedoms, especially those affecting women and girls, were highlighted in reports from international organizations and continue to be addressed in global forums.
The Friends of Afghanistan group consists of several countries that regularly monitor developments in Afghanistan and work to strengthen diplomatic and humanitarian coordination related to the country.
