Four Members of Afghan Migrant Smuggling Network Convicted in UK

British media have reported that a UK court has convicted four members of a human trafficking network that secretly transported Afghan migrants to Britain using a lorry. This network operated in Essex, and after several years of judicial investigation, the case has reached the sentencing stage.

According to reports, in July 2019, the UK’s National Crime Agency identified Mark Yule, 69, from the Colchester area, and Carl Bailey, 52, from the Ongar area. Investigations revealed that these two collaborated with Rohit Chavla and Surjeet Chavla, a father and son from Hayes, London, to transport a group of Sikh migrants from Afghanistan.

On September 7, 2019, officers from the National Crime Agency and the London Metropolitan Police stopped a lorry near the Osterley Cricket Club in west London. Inside the vehicle, 12 people, including a 12-year-old child, were found hidden behind a false wall.

Evidence recovered from mobile phones indicated that members of the Chavla family were present at the scene. Additionally, a SIM card found at the migrants’ hiding place was used to contact them.

Four days after the incident, on September 11, 2019, National Crime Agency officers arrested Bailey and Yule after receiving a report about £65,000 in cash. Authorities believe this amount was paid in exchange for organizing the trafficking operation.

Georgina Venturi of the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service stated that the available evidence, including recorded phone calls, clearly establishes the defendants’ roles and their movements between the UK and France.

According to British officials, the date for the final sentencing will be set at the next court hearing scheduled for June 10.
